The roles and responsibility of phlebotomist

Being a doctor is not the only way to set career in medical industry. There are many other medical studies which can help in finding the best career in medical field. Phlebotomy is one such study through which one can make a better survival in the medical world. In this study individuals will be trained for handling the vein puncture. People who undergo this study will be stated as phlebotomist and can find jobs in hospitals, laboratories and in other medical research center. Even though phlebotomists are available in all the hospitals, many people are not aware of their roles and responsibilities. Here are some of the responsibilities which are handled by phlebotomist.

Preparing patient

The first and foremost thing the phlebotomists are supposed to do is they must prepare the patients. In some case, there may be certain restrictions for taking the tests. For example, in some cases the blood samples must be taken before having food. In some cases, they must be taken after two to three hours from their meals. In such case, the phlebotomist will provide the best guidance for the patients and makes them ready for the test. The preparation they make at this stage is more important to know the exact result from the test.

Blood sample

Once if the phlebotomist feels that the patient is ready for the test, they will draw the blood specimen. They will handle the vein puncture process to draw the blood sample. Since this process must be handled more carefully only the phlebotomist can do it without causing any hassles. The phlebotomist will handle various techniques to make the patients pain free. They will also check the endurance power of the patients and will treat them accordingly.

Specimen and report

Once if the specimen is taken, they will label it in medical terms and will send them to the laboratory for research. In some cases, the specimens are also supposed to be stored for future medical needs of the patients. The phlebotomist will take the responsibility of storing them with all the necessary precautions. In case of need they will also handle the specimen transport. Apart from these, the phlebotomist will be well aware of managing the medical wastes that comes out of this process.

People who are interested in starting their career in phlebotomy must under phlebotomy training in the leading institutions. With the certification from this training they can commence their career as phlebotomist.
