The
Domaine de Kerguéhennec estate, 12 miles
north of Vannes, in southern Brittany, has been the
property of the département of Morbihan since
1972. The 430-acre grounds of the estate, laid out in
1872 by the landscape gardener Denis Bühler (who,
with his brother, designed the Tête d'or gardens
in Lyons, and the Thabor gardens in Rennes), surround
a majestic courtyard formed by the castle and its outbuildings,
all listed historic monuments, commissioned in 1710
from Olivier Delourme, architect of the St. Patern church
in Vannes.
The sculpture park, a rare French example of
the genre, is one of the largest in Europe. It was created
in 1986 by the Ministry of Culture and the Brittany
Regional Contemporary Art Collection [FRAC], and boasts
some 20 works by major artists, commissioned either
by the government or the FRAC, and various pieces on
loan.
The Contemporary Art Centre now has an international
audience. Its exhibitions, which change every two or
three months, are open to artists of all nationalities,
with a focus on markedly investigative work.
Its publications, on sale either at the Domaine itself,
by mail or through any good bookshop, are distributed
in the United States and throughout northern Europe.
Part of the Cultural Centres / Historic Monuments
European network since 1998, in the company of the
Saline of Arc-et-Senans, the Corderie royale at Rochefort,
the Chartreuse of Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, and Fontevraud
abbey, Kerguéhennec has on average 30,000 visitors
a year.
Artists' periods of residence are currently
linked with exhibition projects. But artists are also
invited for longer periods, to work on personal projects,
with the centre as partner.
Introductory art classes are organized with schools
and colleges. The centre, which is traditionally associated
with Brittany's four art schools and the Inspectorate
of Art Teaching, also offers training courses for art
school and university students, in the form of seminars
and individual classes lasting from one week to three
months.
The
association of the Friends of the Domaine de Kerguéhennec
[Domaine des amis] offers its members special privileges
(invitations, exhibition news, meetings with artists,
previews, guided tours, free admission to lectures,
access to documentation, special prices for publications).
Annual fee: 15 €.
The Domaine also houses the Regional Restoration
Workshop, specializing in polychrome sculpture, and
a training and experimental centre run by the Morbihan
Chamber of Agriculture.
The Café du Parc offers light refreshments,
served on the terrace in summer.
